Choosing for a New TV
We love watching TV and the reason is because it is very entertaining. The large display is able to show you moving pictures like movies and video games but when you see different TVs side by side, they are not always the same. The reason why TVs don’t always look the same is because the technology behind it is also different. If you have heard about OLED and QLED, these panels are considered a better or higher option that can improve the viewing experience.
When buying a new TV, what you may need to consider first is the budget. Not all of us have the same amount to spend and the best TV is the one that is both affordable and also pleasant to watch. The price of bigger TVs will be significantly more expensive too, moreover if the panel technology is also higher. If you have a limited budget, we may have to choose between a bigger TV size or a better panel based on which seems more attractive.
Next is considering the size because size is almost equal to immersion and the reason why we love watching movies in the theater is because they have a large screen to show every scene. The larger TVs are amazing if you often watch movies at home and if you have a spacy room as well. Do consider how far you have to sit or watch the TV from because being too close to them is not ideal. It is probably wise to upgrade the size of your previous TV if they were too small for the room.
Display technology plays an important role too but usually people only need to decide between LED, OLED, and QLED. Both the latter are more expensive but supposedly better too and the most noticeable is usually their contrast. OLED and QLED are claimed to be very high in contrast, improving the image quality and watching experience. QLED is more similar to LED with better contrast and brightness while OLED is higher in contrast and overall a more pleasing, with wider viewing angle.
In addition, the resolution matters too. Nowadays most TVs are 4K so we do think it is like a standard choice and it is also getting more affordable. Many videos or content are shot in 4K already, even those free content from streaming sites so to reap the best advantage we can choose the same pixel count. Some companies may already have an 8K panel but it is too early as of now because the content that is available in this resolution is still very limited.

About Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A
Now when you have decided to buy a new TV, it is time to see what the market has to offer because there are so many of them out there. The new TV needs to be better than what we previously had so there is a difference in experience and if you have a smaller TV before, the new one needs to be a bit bigger. But, if you have to choose between larger TV or better panel, the larger size can be a better choice since the size is more noticeable.
There are plenty of electronic manufacturers making a wide range of TV and many are also offering them in different panel types with the various technology behind it. Some of the main players for TVs are Sony and Samsung with their line of modern smart TVs. The highest option made by Sony is their OLED panel while Samsung is famous for their QLED which is a better version of LED but usually inferior to OLED. Price wise QLED is about the same as mid-range LED TVs.
If you are considering the budget too, Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A are two favorite options from these companies. These TVs are some of the best too at moderate price range such as the 55-inch type that is still below the $1,000 and you can already get a decently sized TV for the family room. The two are not identical however because Q70A is an QLED panel while the X85J is an LED so technically the Samsung TV is better but, it is not always the case.
In comparison, the Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A are about the same to each other and the reason is because they produce very similar image quality. The price difference put the Q70A on the higher point but we do think spending money for the X85J is going to save you some. From the image quality they have very similar contrast and also brightness so the TVs are going to give a similar experience too. Read also: Sony X85J Vs Samsung Q60A here.
Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A Design
First let’s take a look at the unit and as you can see from the sample above, these TVs are quite standard. The outer look is clean and the bezel is thin as well but there is also nothing special about the overall appearance. The main difference is when you see the stand because the Q70A is using a single stand in the middle while Sony chooses to use two stands; one on each side. The center stand can sometimes wobble when you tilt the edge.
The build quality is good or decent for a TV in this price range and they are mostly made of plastic too. There is some flex but overall unless you drop them, the TV will be able to last for long. The bezel or border may look the same but measured carefully the Sony is actually slightly thinner than Samsung but when it comes to thickness, the QLED Q70A is much thinner at 1.1 inch while Sony LED TV is about twice its thickness at 2.8 inch.
Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A Image Quality
Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A can offer starting from the image quality but as it has been mentioned above, they are about the same. While X85J is an LED TV, the contrast is amazing and it is probably one of the best for this type of panel among many other options. The QLED is not surprising knowing that it is also a higher technology but the difference is not much and both are very pleasant in a dark room.
What’s surprising is that X85J is achieving this without a local dimming feature. The brightness is also surprisingly on par with each other and unlike OLED, the QLED and LED are typically bright too. This allows you to still enjoy the same experience when watching the TV in a brighter room. It seems that both TVs are providing the same level of brightness whether they are in SDR or HDR mode.
Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A for Gaming
Now for the gaming performance, the Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A are just as good as many other TVs. The monitor is not designed for this type of application but it doesn’t mean we can’t connect a console to it. The input lag is manageable but Samsung is a bit lower at 11 ms while the X85J is about 15.6 ms. in gaming mode. Outside of this mode, they will be much higher and Sony is still slightly higher too. As for the supported resolution, they are also similar.
These TVs are supporting the 1080 60Hz, 120Hz, and 1440p 60Hz natively. The X85J can accept 1440p at 120Hz too but with a little bit more effort as it is not native. What’s noticeably different is that Samsung Q70A is supporting 1440p at both 60Hz and 120Hz natively.
Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A Experience
Lastly for the overall experience, the Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A are very much the same to each other. As expected the viewing angle is very similar too and best when you sit straight from the center of the TV. When you move to the side, the color begins to change. The operating system is the same and if you have an Android TV, the menu will look the same as well. They are smooth and very easy to understand or navigate.
Sony X85J Vs Samsung Q70A
The Sony X85J and Samsung Q70A are good options when you are in the market for a new TV. In comparison the image quality is not far different from each other but the Samsung does support more resolution and is slightly brighter as well as deeper in contrast. The difference is not as noticeable however so we don’t think it will affect the overall experience when watching the TV or gaming on them.
Conclusion
The decision is all yours as both are similarly good TV for the budget. We do recommend the Sony X85J however because this is a good TV and at a cheaper price point. The only drawback we can see is the thicker panel but if you don’t mind the look, this TV will save some on the budget.
