Choosing for a New TV

TV is probably our main source of entertainment when we are at home and even when you don’t really watch much TV shows, we can connect a console and play numerous games that are probably more entertaining. When it comes to TV, it is best to have something bigger but it doesn’t mean you have to spend so much because there is always an alternative to the high-end range. It is highly subjective but these factors can be helpful when you want to shop conveniently.

We do think the best options are those that can fit in your budget range, just like many other products. The more you pay, the more we get from the product and when it comes to TV, it can be both the size and image quality. The standard 4K TVs nowadays are available in various sizes and for many people 42-inch is usually decent but spending more can give you a wider screen. Expensive models usually have an OLED display and if your older TV is LCD then we can notice the difference.

Just like how you may want to game on a larger display or watch movies in a theater to be more immersed into the storyline, a wider display means better experience too. Determining how big the display must relate to how far the distance you watch them from because the further it is, the bigger the display needs to be. For example if you choose to buy a 4K TV such as Sony A90J Vs A80J, we recommend a 1 to 1 ratio between viewing distance to the screen size.

Determine between OLED and LCD display based on the budget and also what you want to have from the TV. To put it simply, OLED is noticeably more expensive but if your older TV is LCD, the noticeable upgrade will most likely be the contrast as OLED displays have a very high contrast that is difficult to replicate by LCD. The drawback is only cost and the risk of permanent burns so some may not last as long as your previous TVs.

Another buying factor that many may not realize it yet is the viewing angle which is also affected by the type of display you have. LCD has a narrower viewing angle compared to OLED and this is why people sitting on the edge of the couch or a bit further from the center of the screen are looking at washed out colors and weird tones. If your new TV is meant for a family room with many people enjoying it together, an OLED display with decent size is going to be a great choice.

About Sony A90J and X90J

At the end of the day TV is a subjective option and you can choose or buy any model that seems to be more suitable for the viewing condition. Price is a reliable measurement on what a product can offer and it is very prominent for TVs. We do think if you have the budget to spend, getting an OLED display will offer a better experience all over whether you want to game or watch movies with them.

Options wise there are plenty to choose from and the TV market is crowded with mostly Japanese and South Korean brands that still currently reign the market with their wide range of options. These brands often offer new technologies including the largest TVs on the market. Previously Samsung brought the size to end consumers and not long ago LG also released the largest TV in the world at 325-inch for an extreme home cinema, the type of experience we can only get from a projector.

Sony for example is one of the most ideal options if you want to look for pretty TVs that also look amazing when powered on. They have more than adequate to consider based on the collection and also your budget range and though some are very similar sounding such as Sony A90J and X90J, they are not exactly the same model. The main difference between these TVs is their panel because A90J and others in the same line are an OLED TV while X90J and its line is an LCD TV.

The comparison is down to the main difference between two panels and as you may already know, OLED will have the superior image quality when it comes to contrast and lively image while LCD is usually much brighter. Another main difference between Sony A90J and X90J is their price point because for the same size, for example a 55-inch variant A90J is more than twice the price of X90J. The decision is all yours because LCD TVs are still good and the fact that they are much more affordable makes the choice available for a wider range of users.

Sony A90J and X90J Design

The fashion is actually not far apart as you can see from the sample picture above. The two have a pretty similar border which is thin about 0.3-inch yet the shape of X90J somehow makes the TV looks thicker in comparison. Measuring the thickest part, X90J is also thicker than A90J at 2.8-inch compared to 1.6-inch. The design of their rear panel is different and aesthetic wise, we do think the A90J looks better here because it is flat while the latter is a bit curved.

The stand is different too, and if you choose to mount them on a table, the A90J does look more expensive. You can adjust the feet to be flat on the table or a bit higher when the soundbar is supposed to be put below it. As for the X90J, it has the standard feet with a curved bottom and it is fixed in one position that is almost as wide as the TV itself with no option to move them closer.

Sony A90J and X90J Image Quality

Now for the most important part, let’s see what they can offer starting from the display which is also the main difference between Sony A90J and X90J. Being an OLED display you will get a noticeably better contrast ratio but it is actually not by much because X90J is also impressive. The native contrast itself is 5,600:1 and slightly increased with local dimming. This model is using a full-array local dimming technology which helps improve the blacks on your image.

However, when watching SDR content, A90J is not going to be as bright as the X90J which is to be expected and the difference is actually very noticeable. The brightness of A90J is actually better when it is fed with HDR content but it is still not as bright as the X90J. As for the native resolution, they are identical at 4K 120Hz native or 1080p at 120Hz. You can’t use 1440p in 120Hz but we can still force feed them with the 60Hz with some drawbacks.

Sony A90J and X90J for Gaming

The Sony A90J and X90J are also perfect for gaming purposes with low input lag. They may not be the best and most attractive offering for this type of users but there is no reason to not plug a console into them. The A90J is just slightly faster which won’t translate into meaningful differences in real-life experience. To achieve better performance while gaming, we recommend choosing the game or graphic mode since the latency is more prominent on other standard modes.

Sony A90J and X90J Experience

Lastly for the experience, contrast and color quality wise the Sony A90J and X90J are impressive, especially for the latter since it is not far different from the OLED. The difference is more noticeable when it comes to viewing angle and reflection when you watch with a light source in the room. Being LCD the color will start to wash out as you move away from the center of the TV while the OLED display can maintain the experience. Reflection is also more visible on X90J.

Sony A90J Vs X90J

Both Sony A90J and X90J are good options with some pros and cons accompanying your decision. In general the image will have better contrast on A90J as it is an OLED model but LCD is brighter both in SDR and HDR. The design of A90J is arguably prettier and thinner as well as has a more versatile stand. The experience when watching them is a bit different when you sit further away from the center of the screen and X90J also causes more glares depending on where your light source is at.

Conclusion

The decision is all yours because both are great choices and still not completely perfect. We do think if none of these pros from A90J over X90J sounds important to you, the price gap is quite far and X90J is a wiser choice but if you want a more premium experience, the answer will be A90J.
